St. Louis setting for fascinating TG4documentary

Monaghan Town’s St. Louis Convent and Secondary School is forming the backcloth for a fascinating documentary being prepared by the Irish Language television station TG4.

The St. Louis complex was a hive of activity last week with a television crew from Aerga Productions, Bellewstown, Co. Meath busy shooting footage for the programme entitled Clann Lughaidh.

The documentary tells the story of the three women Bridín Uí Mhaolagáin (nee Dobbyn), Bláthnaid O Brádaigh (nee Dobbyn) and Bláthnaid Carmody (nee Nicholson) who attended the school between 1943 and 1955.

The women take a trip down memory lane, strolling in the nun’s garden and along the arcade, reminiscing about days gone by and a world that has ceased to exist.

They tell funny stories about the mischief they got up to as so called ‘Lady Boarders’ and remember fondly the sisters who took such good care of them, and set such high standards, before letting them off into the world.

Producer/Director Orlaith Carmody came across priceless archive footage of the school and the nuns in the forties and fifties in the National Film Archive.  When she found the three women, her mother and two of her school friends, featured in the footage, she knew it had to be put to good use.

Still photos, roll books and records of the women were also to be found in the St. Louis Heritage Centre with the help of Sr. Deirdre O’ Connor, Sr. Maura Dempsey and Sr. Eilís Thiarnaigh.

Clann Lughaidh will be broadcasted as part of the Cogar series on TG4 on a Sunday evening in early September.
